Smartphone accessories specialized company SANDMARC has just introduced a new variable ND filter for iPhone and smartphone shooters: the SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter. This filter is compatible with SANDMARC lenses, but you can also simply clip it directly onto your phone, without the need for a dedicated case. With a range from ND8 to ND64, let’s take a closer look at how this SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter can help you capture better footage with your smartphone.
The SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter is a variable ND filter specifically designed for smartphone filmmakers. According to the company it is “engineered from a cinema glass” with very little color shift. Also, they claim that the filter design avoids cross vignetting (X bar) that is “commonly seen in other variable ND filters.”

The filter frame is made out of aluminum, with laser markings of the different ND Levels. The SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter can go from ND8 (3 stops of light) to ND64 (6 stops of light). At ND64, this should be enough for shooting videos in bright daylight while keeping your aperture/shutter speed to correct levels.
What I like about this Motion Variable Filter is that you can use it with SANDMARC existing lenses, including the Anamorphic, Wide and Telephoto ones. However, if you don’t have some of these lenses, or you want to use the Motion Variable Filter directly in front of your built-in smartphone lenses, you can do it. The filter comes with a Phone Clip Mount that attaches directly onto your smartphone, without the need for a dedicated case.
The SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter is compatible with all iPhones from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. For Android shooters, you can use it with the Samsung S20 Ultra, Samsung S9, Google Pixel 4, Huawei P40/P30/P20 Pro, and much more.
The SANDMARC Motion Variable Filter is in the pre-order stage for $99.99, and it should start shipping at the end of June. For more information and pre-order it, please visit SANDMARC’s website here.
What do you think of this SANDMARC variable ND filter for smartphones? Do you often shoot with additional lenses and filters on your smartphone? Let us know in the comments below!
